The South Carolina Career Guidance Model (SC-CGM) is designed to help parents, school districts, and communities engage students in the lifelong learning process of career development. The challenge is to empower students to make a successful transition from school to the world of work, from job to job, across their career life span, and to be productive citizens. The passage of the 2005 Education and Economic Development Act provides students with an unprecedented opportunity to utilize a high quality, research and standards-based K-12 career development delivery system in preparation for life and career challenges in the 21st century workforce.
At the heart of the South Carolina Career Guidance Model is the mission of improving students’ knowledge of careers while adhering to the standards and competencies set forth in the South Carolina Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program Model. When students receive career information at an early age, school involvement and school performance improve. Students increase their social and interpersonal skills. Students’ confidence, competence and motivation increase, and this leads to academic success. The implementation of this Model will reinforce the academic skills, higher order thinking skills, and personal qualities that are necessary for success in the workplace while students learn the process of becoming life long learners.
